Twinning or Partnerschaftgesellschaft in German
Weilerswist is a small town in the district of Euskirchen in the Westphalia region of northern Germany. It is
situated almost halfway between Bonn and Cologne on the river Swist.
The town encompasses a number of villages and is roughly sized between Whitnash and Leamington.
There is a small shopping centre but the main shopping experience is at the major cities nearby and Brühl (the twin town of Leamington Spa).
The Cologne area of Germany is renowned for its Carnival season.
A number of members in the past have been invited to Germany take part in the fun. Weilerswist members also came over to the
last Whitnash Carnival where they won the Best Float award.
The Association first twinned with Weilerswist on the 25th August 1989 and the
Twinning Arrangement was signed by the following representatives.
- Brian Smart - Chairman of Whitnash Town Council
- Tony Heath - Chairman of Whitnash Twinning Association
- Jens Uwe Kaulen - Bürgermeister der Gemeinde Weilerswist
- Peter Schlösser - Gemeindedirektor der Gemeinde Weilerswist
The 10th Anniversary of the signing was celebrated in Whitnash in August 1999
with a visit from our German friends with whom we enjoyed a week of festivities,
which included cultural, educational and leisure activities.
Both towns have had a place named in their honour. In August 1998 a square in
Weilerswist was named Whitnash Platz and on the 28th of August 1999 a street in
Whitnash was named Weilerswist Drive.
A friendship tree was planted on the green outside the Plough & Harrow Public
House.
The incumbent Bürgermeister of Weilerswist Dieter Zeller and Whitnash
Mayor Judy Falp performed both of these ceremonies.
Then in August 2000 a friendship tree was planted in Weilerswist. Brian Smart
(Mayor of Whitnash) Alistair MacFarlane (Chairman of Whitnash Twinning Association)
and Armen Fuss (Bürgermeister of Weilerswist) performed this ceremony.
We shall be hosting our German friends again later this year (2001). Details will
be published soon. For more information please mail one of the representatives below.
Over the years lasting friendships have been made resulting in private visits,
where invitations to weddings and special birthday parties have been received, and
and accepted, in both Whitnash and Weilerswist.
